Brazilian Hair Treatment FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about Brazilian keratin treatments (progressiva), hair B-tox (also known as hair botox) and smoothing products sold at Beautyandwoman (BEAUTYANDWOMAN LLC, Orlando, Florida).

Products

What is a Brazilian keratin treatment (progressive brush)?

A Brazilian keratin treatment, called progressiva or progressive brush in Brazil, is a hair smoothing treatment. It is applied after a deep-cleansing shampoo, left on for a set time, then sealed with a blow-dryer and flat iron. It reduces frizz and volume and leaves hair straighter and shinier. Brands we carry include Top Vip, Let Me Be, Portier, Cadiveu, Maria Escandalosa, Zap, G.Hair and Forever Liss.

Is a keratin treatment the same as a Brazilian Blowout?

Not exactly. Brazilian Blowout is the brand name of a specific salon smoothing treatment, although many people use the term for any Brazilian smoothing service. The keratin treatments we sell are made by other Brazilian brands and are not Brazilian Blowout products. If you are looking for a Brazilian-style keratin smoothing treatment to use at home or in the salon, browse our Brazilian keratin treatment kits.

What is hair B-tox (hair botox)?

Hair B-tox, also called hair botox treatment, btox or bbtox, is a conditioning, volume-reducing hair mask. It does not contain botulinum toxin; the name is a market term. Most hair B-tox products are applied to washed hair, left on for 20 to 40 minutes and sealed with a flat iron.

Hair botox vs keratin treatment: what is the difference?

A keratin treatment focuses on smoothing and straightening, so hair looks straighter with less volume. A hair B-tox (hair botox) focuses on conditioning and volume reduction with a softer, more natural result. Many people use a keratin treatment first and a hair B-tox between treatments for maintenance.

Are your keratin treatments formaldehyde-free?

Many products we sell are described as formaldehyde-free (0% formaldehyde) by their manufacturers. Each product page states whether the manufacturer labels it that way. Always check the product label and follow the manufacturer's directions.

Do I need a flat iron?

Yes for most keratin treatments and hair B-tox products: heat from the flat iron seals the treatment. In-shower keratin treatments (for example, Maria Escandalosa Progressive in the Shower) only need a blow-dryer.

Can I do a keratin treatment at home?

Yes. Home sizes (about 150 to 300 ml or 250 g) are made for at-home use; follow the step-by-step directions on each product page and do a strand test first. Salon sizes (1 L or 1 kg) are meant for professionals or repeat use. The formula is the same within each product line.

Is there a keratin treatment for curly hair?

Yes. Several kits are made for curly, voluminous hair, for example the Maria Escandalosa Keratin Treatment Kit. Results vary with hair type, so check each product page.

Can I use these products on blonde, bleached or gray hair?

Yes, with care. Choose products made for light hair, such as violet or toning B-tox masks (for example Maria Escandalosa Violet B-tox, Let Me Be Blond Matiz or Portier Ciclos Violet), and always do a strand test first.

Is Maria Escandalosa the same as Bonequinha Escandalosa?

Yes. Bonequinha Escandalosa is now sold under the Maria Escandalosa name.
